Check pool status before treasury swaps
A pool’s status determines whether a treasury swap can execute, but depth, price impact and route availability decide whether the trade is practical.

Can your treasury swap through an inactive pool? No: on THORChain, the pool must be available for trading, and a pool that is merely staged cannot execute swaps. But “inactive” is not a single status that tells you everything; check the protocol’s current pool status, then assess the route and its liquidity before sending funds.
What does active mean for a treasury swap?
An active pool is enabled for trading; a staged pool is not. THORChain routes swaps between external assets through their RUNE pools, so a BTC-to-ETH treasury trade relies on both pool legs being available. For the transaction flow, the thor swap explainer gives the fuller walkthrough.
A pool can also be suspended, which differs from being staged: the status can reflect a trading restriction rather than a pool awaiting promotion. THORChain’s pool data uses statuses such as “available,” “staged” and “suspended”; its developer docs say only “available” pools are available to trade. Treat “inactive” as a broad description until you’ve checked the specific status.
How should you assess a route?
Availability answers whether the swap can use a pool, not whether the quote suits your treasury. Pool depth affects price impact: a large order relative to available liquidity moves the pool price more. Fees and the two pool legs also shape the output, so compare the full route quote with your execution limits.
- Check that every pool on the route is currently available.
- Compare pool depths with the planned order size.
- Review quoted output, fees and slippage limits together.
- Recheck network and chain status close to execution.
What should a treasury do with an unavailable pool?
Do not treat a staged pool as a low-liquidity trading option: it does not trade or earn swap fees while staged, though liquidity can still be deposited or withdrawn. If a required pool is unavailable, wait or reassess the route; do not assume another route is equivalent, since it can change cost, exposure and execution risk.
For most treasuries, the better control is a pre-trade check tied to the actual order: confirm pool status, quote the route, and set a maximum acceptable price impact before signing. Watch the pool’s live status and the quote immediately before the next swap; a status snapshot can change before execution.
