Solana activates Alpenglow, targeting 150ms finality

Can Solana make a payment final in a fraction of a second? The network activated Alpenglow on Wednesday, replacing its old validator voting system with one designed to reach finality in about 150 milliseconds. CoinDesk’s report on the activation says users can keep their existing wallets, with fees and applications unchanged.

How does Alpenglow change transaction finality?

Alpenglow moves validator votes off-chain: validators send votes directly to one another, then combine approvals into certificates that can finalize a block after one or two voting rounds. Under the previous TowerBFT system, votes were recorded as on-chain transactions and approvals accumulated across blocks. Solana’s upgrade tracker lists Alpenglow as live on mainnet, with a roughly 150ms target compared with 12.8 seconds for TowerBFT.

That target describes how quickly the network can treat a transaction as settled; it does not guarantee that every app will show finality in 150ms. CoinDesk reports that some computers may receive finality information later than the validators themselves. The actual wait a user sees can therefore depend on the service handling the transaction.

What could users notice first?

Apps that wait for full finality before releasing funds or goods could act sooner. That may mean faster exchange deposits becoming available to trade, or less waiting at a shop accepting stablecoin payments. The practical benefit is stronger assurance that a payment will hold, sooner after it is made.

There is also a change in what network dashboards count. Because validator votes no longer appear as on-chain transactions, reported transaction totals may fall even if users are still making the same number of payments and trades. Comparisons across the upgrade need to separate user activity from the validator votes that previously filled blocks.

For users, no wallet switch or fee change is required. Watch whether apps bring their settlement waits closer to Alpenglow’s 150ms target under normal network conditions.
