Can you buy a locally listed bitcoin or ether ETF in Thailand now? The Securities and Exchange Commission has issued 11 notifications creating the framework, but they take effect on Oct. 16, 2026. The Thai SEC’s announcement sets the conditions for funds to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET); it does not announce a specific ETF launch. For investors, the change creates a route to crypto exposure through the country’s regulated fund and stock-market framework.
What can a Thai crypto ETF hold?
Initially, eligible assets are bitcoin and ether, and each fund must track one crypto asset as a passive investment. It must maintain average net exposure of at least 80% of net asset value to that asset over each accounting year, according to the SEC. CoinDesk’s report on the rules also notes that funds must trade on the SET, giving investors a domestic exchange route rather than requiring direct coin trading.
What safeguards apply before you can trade?
Fund assets must be held by digital asset custodians regulated by Thailand’s SEC, and asset managers can outsource crypto investment management only to licensed digital asset fund managers. Investors must receive risk information and confirm they understand it before trading. Brokers cannot provide margin loans to finance ETF purchases, and fund managers must disclose each product’s structure, investment mechanisms, service providers and specific risks.
Can funds invest in these ETFs, and what remains restricted?
Thai mutual funds and private funds will be allowed to invest in locally listed crypto ETFs, subject to existing investment limits. During the initial phase, the SEC will not permit depositary receipts linked to foreign crypto ETFs or securities firms arranging foreign crypto ETF investments for clients who are neither institutional nor ultra-high-net-worth investors. The next date to watch is Oct. 16, when the new rules take effect and Thai asset managers can operate under the framework.
