Coin Center Executive Director Jerry Brito Announces Departure

Jerry Brito to Depart Coin Center

Coin Center's Executive Director Jerry Brito, a co-founder of the nonprofit research and advocacy organization, has announced his intention to leave the organization at the end of the year. In a post shared on Monday, Brito revealed that Senior Policy Counsel Robin Weisman would also be stepping down.

Future Roles and Leadership Changes

Despite their departures, both Brito and Weisman will remain on Coin Center's board of directors and continue to advise the team. "I’ll leave my role at Coin Center very proud of what we’ve accomplished over the last ten years," Brito stated. He highlighted the uncertain landscape for Bitcoin when the organization was founded in 2014, noting the challenges posed by governmental actions.

New Executive Director Appointment

Peter Van Valkenburgh, currently the research director, is set to succeed Brito as Executive Director on January 1, 2025. Other changes include Landon Zinda being appointed as policy director, and Antonie Hodge and Neeraj Agrawal assuming expanded roles in fundraising and management.

Legal Challenges Faced by Coin Center

Coin Center has been actively involved in several legal matters in Washington, including an ongoing legal battle with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service since 2022 over a controversial crypto-tax reporting requirement. This requirement would mandate that individuals and businesses receiving $10,000 or more in cryptocurrency report personal information to the government.

Additionally, Coin Center previously filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Treasury Department concerning its sanctions on the transaction mixer Tornado Cash, arguing that the Treasury exceeded its authority.
